Ice Queen Self Portraits

In 2023, I decided to dive more into self portraits. It started simple. Set up the camera, do my hair, take some pictures. It didn’t take long for the thrill of that to wear off. There’s only so many variations you can do with your face! So, I decided to liven it up! The big jump I made was with my Halloween clown self portraits (link to those coming soon). They were a huge hit, and so fun to create. From there I decided to start doing themed portraits that would often coincide with calendar holidays or seasons. So, for winter I chose to do an Ice Queen theme.

These self portraits were some of the hardest ones I’ve done. You can’t see what you’re doing, you can’t see your hair, the light, or the way your face looks, like you can when you’re behind the camera. Between the wig, the dress, and the makeup, I was falling all over the place! I use my phone as my remote and can see myself briefly, but I couldn’t stare at my phone while taking the photo. I had to get into position! My lighting was off and I spent a lot of time in Photoshop, trying to edit random hairs and touch up makeup, but in the end I’m happy with the chaotic results.

These photos were done at my studio, Collective. They were shot at night with a single Einstein from Paul C Buff using a stripbox. Wig from Amazon and set up includes varies white fabrics and blankets, paper, and v-flats.
